But what is it really, and what does it do?
You hear it mentioned in relation to CBD and wellness, explained away briefly when the entourage effect is being talked about, but do you know what it regulates, how, and why you should care?
Let's answer the obvious question first. What is the endocannabinoid system?
The endocannabinoid system is a vast signaling network that acts as your body's regulator of homeostasis - the stable internal state your cells need to function.
When something in your body goes too far, say you get a fever or your blood sugar spikes after a meal, the endocannabinoid system can help balance it out. It makes endocannabinoids to bind to nearby cells and help cool the overactivity, quiet the signaling, or settle things back down.
The endocannabinoid system is a distributed system woven through your brain, organs, immune cells, connective tissue, and skin, and it runs on three interacting components:

Endocannabinoids are the molecules your body makes to carry a message.
The two best-known ones are anandamide (often called the bliss molecule) and 2-AG. They’re built from fat molecules in your cell membranes, made on demand, used quickly, and then broken down almost immediately.
And they can work backward. In the nervous system, the receiving cell can make them and send them back to the sending cell, basically saying: turn this signal up, turn it down, or stop sending so much of it.
If endocannabinoids are the message, receptors are where the message is delivered.
The two main cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2. Both are found on the surface of cells and act as receivers.
CB1 receptors are mostly in your brain and nervous system. They’re found in areas that support mood, memory, appetite, movement, and pain.
CB2 receptors are found mostly on immune cells and in tissues throughout the body. They help regulate immune activity, inflammation, pain, and recovery.
Enzymes help build endocannabinoids when your body needs them, and then break them down once the message has been delivered. Endocannabinoids act locally, do their job, and get cleared quickly so the signal does not stay longer than needed.
It’s an extremely efficient system. Your body makes the message, sends it, receives it, and clears it. Fast, efficient, and completely automatic.
This is the part that will make you go "oh, that's why it matters." The endocannabinoid system has a hand in a surprising number of everyday functions:

Notice a theme? These are all things that need to stay balanced. Too much or too little of any of them causes problems. The endocannabinoid system is one of the tools your body uses to move them back toward the middle.
CBD is a phytocannabinoid, which means it is a cannabinoid made by the cannabis plant. Your body does not make CBD, but CBD can interact with the same wider system your own endocannabinoids use.
THC can bind directly to CB1 receptors, and that direct CB1 activation is a big part of why THC can cause a high. CBD is different. It has a low affinity for CB1 and CB2, which means it does not strongly attach to those receptors in the same direct way.
Instead, it may change how CB1 receptors respond to other molecules. This is called allosteric modulation. In simple terms, CBD may bind to a different part of the receptor and change how strongly that receptor reacts when something else binds to it.
So when people say CBD “supports the endocannabinoid system,” what they mean is:
CBD does not replace your endocannabinoids or make the endocannabinoid system work. It appears to influence how the system communicates, how quickly some signals are cleared, and how strongly receptors respond.
You don't need a supplement to support the endocannabinoid system. A few ordinary habits are thought to support it naturally:
